# Search

> Find investments, transactions, and market data, or ask the assistant, from anywhere in InvestSync

## Overview

Search sits in the header on every page. Use it to jump straight to a holding, check a recent transaction, look up a listed company, or ask the assistant a question — all without leaving the page you are on.

## Before you start

Make sure you are in the right organisation. Search only covers the organisation shown in the header.

## Open search

* Select **Search organisation** in the header, or
* Press **⌘K** on a Mac or **Ctrl+K** on Windows.

Press **⌘K** or **Esc** again to close it.

## Search your organisation

1. Open search and start typing. Results appear once you have typed at least two characters.
2. Review the grouped results:
   * **Investments** — name, code or ticker, owning entity, latest value, and the change since the previous valuation, with a small trend line behind each card.
   * **Transactions** — the five most recent matches, with date, type, and reporting amount.
   * **Market data** — listed companies and funds matching your search, with the latest price and daily movement.
3. Select a result:
   * An investment or transaction opens the relevant investment page.
   * A market data result opens the company's public market page in a new tab.

## Ask a question instead

Search recognises when you are asking something rather than looking something up. If you type a question — anything ending in a question mark, or starting with words such as **what**, **how**, **why**, or **show me** — the assistant is offered at the top of the list and search results are set aside.

1. Type your question, for example *What is my largest holding?*
2. Press **Enter** to accept **Ask the assistant**. The answer appears in the search window.
3. From there you can:
   * Select **Continue in chat** to open the full assistant with the question and answer already in place, ready for follow-ups.
   * Select **Back to search** to return to your results.

You can also select **Open in the assistant** to skip the short answer and start a full conversation straight away.

If you would rather see search results for a question you have typed, select **Search instead**.

## Tips

* Search matches investment names, short codes, tickers, and entity names.
* Type a transaction type such as `dividend`, `buy`, or `return of capital` to find recent transactions of that type.
* **Ask the assistant** is available for any search term, not only questions — useful when the results are close but not quite what you need.
* Results stay on screen while you keep typing, so the list never flashes empty between keystrokes.
* Market prices arrive a moment after the rest of the results and show as **—** until they land.

## Troubleshooting

* **No matches found** — check the spelling, try the short code or ticker, or search on the entity name instead.
* **Nothing happens on ⌘K** — select into the page first, then try again. Some browser extensions claim the same shortcut.
* **Prices show as —** — market data is briefly unavailable. The rest of your results are unaffected, and prices refresh when you search again.
* **The assistant could not answer that** — select **Retry**. If it keeps failing, open the assistant from the main menu and ask there.
